The Langtang National Park, which spreads over the regions of both Langtang and Helambu, is the second largest in Nepal, just north of Kathmandu and is close to the border of Tibet. The Langtang valley is considered as one of the most beautiful valley and the people who live here are mostly Tamangs, provide easy access trekking with breathtaking mountain views and especially rich plant and animal life and another very beautiful region for trekking. Its Tamang villages are also beautifully manicured and less touristed that those of the Khumbu or Annapurna areas. This trekking is in the heart of the Himalyas’s. The park has healthy forests of rhododendron, fir, blue and chair pine and birch. Wildlife includes leopard, musk deer, Himalyan black bear, and rhesus and langur monkeys. The influence of trekkers has not been as great in this area of Nepal and lends to rewarding cultural exchanges with the inhabitants of the region.
A journey up the lush Langtang Valley through Syabrubesi and the glacial plain of Kyangjin Gompa can be a self-contained week-long trek, or it can be coupled with a visit to the sacred lake of Gosainkund at 4000m for a slightly longer trip. Either way this trek is ideal for nature lovers, with its wide array of flora and fauna.
The valley is dominated by Langtang Lirung (7246m), the highest peak in the area. The trek with its optional climb of Yala Peak 5732 and the necessary ascent of Ganja La 5306m, provide a perfect introduction to Himalyan climbing and an unsurpassed trekking experience. The climb of Yala Peak whilst not technical will require the use of crampons, ice axe and rope, particularly over the last 400m, and the knife edged summit it demands a certain commitment and mind focusing that will keep the adrenalin pumping. From the summit we will have a 360 degree panorama and will take in such sights as Shisapangma 8046m and the fluted Gangchempo 6388m.
Those who chose not to climb will have the opportunity to explore further in the Langtang valley to Langshisa Kharka and beyond. This will provide a unique opportunity for exploration in an area rarely visited by trekkers and provide stunning glimpses of Langshisa-Ri 6412m and Urkeinmang 6151 to name but a few.
Following on from the climb, we will regroup, and head for the ascent of Ganja La which will take us out of the Langtang valley and into the Helambu region. The La or Pass will need commitment and team work from us all and may require the use of fixed ropes to achieve our objective. Our efforts will be rewarded
with superlative views of a myriad of peaks and ridgelines to our north extending to the Tibetan border and beyond.
Our trek south will take us over a high snow covered plateau down to the village of Tarkeghyang, which is the largest Sherpa village in the Helambu, where we will have ample time to mix with the locals and undoubtedly realize the subtle cultural differences between the Helambu Sherap and the Solukhumbu sherpa that inhabit the Langtang valley. Pressing on we will make a rather rapid descent to Talamarang following the Melamchi Kohla, then turning sought west, cross and climb to Patibhanjyang and Chisapani before, once again descending to Mulkharka and finally Sundarijal where will board our bus for Kathmandu. The people of this last, undulating ridge are Tamang, an ethnic group with their own distinct customs and language. You will also note that as we descend we will return to forested areas that contain many Rhododendrons (Nepal’s National flower) with some that grow into medium sized trees.
